Drawing from A to Z
Drawing is exciting, it helps you to understand what you see
and it enables you to illustrate ideas that others cannot see. It is
an excellent way to get to know a new landscape, how a building is constructed
or how a body moves.
This course is designed for beginners and for more experienced artists
who want to get back to basics. It is an intensive and completely structured
four days in which we will explore analytical and expressive drawing
methods. On day one we start with the basics of perspective and proportion,
moving on to form, tone, negative space, mark making, texture, light
and dark, composition; and by day 4 we will be experimenting with large
scale expressive drawings.
We will use a range of materials including, graphite, charcoal, ink,
coloured crayons, water colour, acrylic paint, large brushes. The course
is mostly studio based but will include some work in the landscape.
“Thank you Joy for so cleverly helping to free me of my inhibitions
and find my inner artist.” Ian
“Only four days but such a well prepared and carefully structured
course that I feel thoroughly moved on in the pleasures of observation
and drawing” Sue
An Italian Sketchbook Course
This course is designed for those who enjoy sketching or scribbling
in a notebook; who like to collect lots of visual notes to use for a
larger pieces of work; or who would just like to start sketching. It
is suitable for beginners and experiences artists.
On this course we will spend 4 days wandering around the hills and
medieval towns in northern Italy sketching and collecting information
and notes. We will do all our sketching outside. Although the idea is
to fill the sketch book with your own interests and thoughts, there
will be exercises to do to push your boundaries. For example completing
a certain number a sketches in a certain time; sketching something from
four different viewpoints; sketching subjects that you normally shy
away from - on this course you will be asked to have a go at everything
I guarantee you will end up being happily surprised with the results.
Sketch books and drawing equipment, – pencils, pens, inks, charcoal,
small watercolour sets are provided. But if you want to bring your own
sketch book or materials feel free.
"A sketchbook to take home that I never dreamed that I’d
have.” Chloe
“Joy’s teaching style and gentle pushing to try new
things brought out the best in us and has given us knowledge to take
home.” Beverley and Martin

Your Tutor – Joy Moore
Joy is a graduate of Birmingham Art School, where she won the Dame Elizabeth
Ryland scholarship in her final year. She lived in West London for 25
years where she became well established as an artist exhibiting regularly
at local galleries and elsewhere in London and the north of England,
and taking part in international art fairs.
Since arriving in Italy in 2006 she has become well established locally
and has exhibited in many regions throughout Italy, from Piemonte to
Tuscany to Puglia. She is now represented in Galleries across Europe.
Joy is primarily a landscape painter. Her work is about the response
to the form, colour, space and light in landscape aiming to paint the
power and existence of the landscape rather than the view of it.
Her work can be seen on her website – www.joymoorelandscapes.com
“Your work is stunning, Joy, but you are one of the very
few artists in my experience who can translate those talents into empathetic
teaching based on a genuine interest in what other people are doing.”
Liz
